End gnome session from terminal

Ho all I'm looking for a way to end the gnome session  and prompt me
to log out. But i want to be able to do this by issueing a command
from the terminal.  Any takers?  i have tried about 20 different
commands and none work as of yet. the old 3 finger salute works but
thats not what i want.
