If all you want to do is *add* stuff, then it's not terribly difficult.
You need an appropriate .desktop file in /usr/share/applications.   You
can use a shell script like the one I link to below to automate the
process.  To remove stuff, you can delete the .desktop file

Disclaimer:  Use script at your own risk.  It works fine for me, though.
