This "fine" was a bit too fast. A consistent /etc/hosts would be:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.0.1 home.bear.net home
192.168.0.2 pegasus.bear.net pegasus

The second line might to be:

192.168.0.1 bear.bear.net bear
