An additional factor, just to have fun:

Leaving the hard disk on doesn't always increase its life. In fact,
until I made sure that my system was cooling properly, I was going
through a hard drive a year (5 years in a row!). I think this one is
licked - the current drives have both lasted two years.

Chalk this one up to cheap drives.
