Monitor 'refresh' problem

The entry would be in the section related to the device. You would have 
"i810" entry instead of "radeon". also, you wouldn't comment out the 
file with a # as I have it.

You have to edit the file as root as you discovered. If you totally mess 
up the file, you can try running
system-config-display --reconfig
as root while in runlevel 3.

You should be back in the same boat after reinstalling the system. The 
driver is fouled up and reloading should not change anything.
