    Well, Linux is in the tradition of Unix; think Mainframes.  The
overall idea is to keep it on, just logging in/out at will.  It not only
avoids the long boot delay that PCs have, but allows daemons to keep
working for email, web, what-have-ya.

    There has been (too) much debate as to whether this is a good idea,
but the situation suits me here.  When you go to logoff, there's a
choice of logoff/shutdown/restart.  And, when you're not in graphics
mode, the ol' three finger salute will still reboot the machine.  (Or,
whatever command you tell it to do.)
