Dell 2005FPW runs at 1680x1050 but looks much lower...?

Part of that is probably the font smoothing that windows has, and part
of it is that Linux is detecting the dpi of your monitor and adjusting
font sizes accordingly, something that windows is not very good about.
You should investigate changing the font sizes or overriding the dpi.
