is fedora okay for people just playing around?

Fedora should be okay for you. One of the big obstacles people face using
Linux is the installation. Anaconda kills that, it's a superb installer
from Red Hat.
Or if you are totally dumb you could try out with Live CD Distributions like
Knoppix, Mepix et cetera :-)
