X-server won't start with K7VM3 system

The problem was the monitor. Replacing it with a HP monitor X-windows launches. It seems that the default values assumed were inappropriate.

  Subject: X-server won't start with K7VM3 system

I installed fedora core 3 on a PC with an asrock motherboard K7VM3/E/M/ESYS.
This has a VIA KM266Pro chipset. Anaconda recognised the video controller as an S3 but X-Windows failed to launch - error being a negative/unknown video mode. It did not recognise my monitor. (An Ipex 17").

  Any suggestions?
