Memory Mgmt

hi ! this is Kamesh. 
i have been having this doubt for quiet some time: -
In a 32-bit architecture, the max amt of memory that can be 
used is 4GB, of which 3GB for user space pgms & 1 GB for 
 kernel related data structures. *Is this in general a 3:1 ratio ??*
* *On a m/c with 256 MB, how would the user space / kernel 
 space memory be divided ?
