In case anyone does this, I will answer my own question. It turns out that the line for the loopback interface in /etc/hosts had gotten commented out. This broke gnome logouts open office start up the printer configuration utility Removing the comment character fixed these problems. Removing the person who edited the /etc/hosts would help, also.
