So that controller is supported:

/lib/modules/2.6.10-1.770_FC3/kernel/drivers/scsi/sata_promise.ko

(btw. you should update your kernel for security reasons)

SATA has no master / slave concept.
How is the controller configured in motherboard BIOS? You should set it
to UDMA controller only and not to RAID mode.
