Yum extender updates

Hi all, 
    I have been using Yum ex for a while and I really like it.  My
question is, should I pretty much download all the updates that are
offered from the "base" and "updates released" repos?  I dont know what
alot of that stuff does, I am really new to linux, but I dont want to
not download something just cause I personally dont know/think I need
it.  Any advice with updates for a newbie?
