configuring remote printer

My problem turned out to be that having
configured the printer wrong once,
actual printing was disabled.
Naturally, the GUI provided no clue to this behaviour.
'Twas discovered by editing a *.conf file,
per a googled-to suggestion that that was the easiest way to handle CUPS.

The ranter was quite right about the CUPS GUI.
