HDD not recognized on linux reinstall

Hi,

There is a strange problem here, in that upon installation of any linux OS
(RH9/FC2/3/Mandrake9.1, etc) the hard drive is no longer recognized. The
details are
as follows (obtained using MS Windoze XP):

ST380817AS (most probably Seagate hard drive)

Also, the following IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers (Intel(R) 82801FB Ultra ATA
Storage Controllers - 2651

is not recognized. (I must confess that I do not know what the above really
means.) This problem started after a fresh reinstall -- previously, it
apparently used to work fine.

Any pointers? Suggestions?
