OT: What's the deal with Ubuntu?

The thing I never quite understood about gentoo is - how do you diagnose
a problem?  If your compiled binaries are different than everyone
else's, how do you know if a problem is unique to your system or not?
And if they aren't different, why spend all that time compiling your
own copy?

'Education' sometimes means learning stupid quirks that aren't
useful in any general sense.  If you learn things that also apply
to other distributions, you could learn them there too.
