There are a lot of different ways to do it now (some of which are
really different ways to do the same thing). I suggest starting by
searching for and reading about

xdmcp
FreeNX (or NoMachine, the $$ version)
VNC
LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project)

There are probably lots of other things I'm not thinking of, too.
