Hal files in etc

Hotplug is not working and I have found a bunch of files like this in my 
/etc

.fstab.hal.0, .fstab.hal.0h and alike generally unknowk type, apart from 
.fstab.hal.m Objective-C source code and a .fstab.hal.p Pascal source 
code a a .pwd.lock (unknown)

What does it mean??? can I delete them???
