fedora core 3 with firewire tapedrive

I'm trying to use an exabyte vxa-1 firewire tapedrive with fedora core 3, 
but the device is not showing up in /dev.
Do I need to recompile the kernel to support ieee1394. I noticed that the 
modules are already installed when I do a modprobe list.
Any thoughts or links on this subject would really help me out.
