You could try this and understand much is in  text mode:
1) find out what version of alsa got put on your system perhaps using yum,
    2) from ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/utils/ download
    alsa-utils-x.y.z.tar.gz, 3) build the alsa-utils package you
    downloaded, 4) run alsaconf and agree to have your /etc/modules.conf
    file modified, 5) if you get an error like rc.alsasound not found bbut
    alsaconf says you're now operational reboot, 6) do the steps with
    alsamixer suggested earlier maximizing everything, 7) do alsactl store,
    8) try something like aplay -q /usr/share/sounds/KDE-Startup.wav, 9) if
    the dead haven't woke up yet you live well out of earshot from a
    cemetery. That should have done it and some of your neighbors may be
    complaining too. I had to do all of that just to get a shot at having
    gnopernicus start up.  It works here so is returned your way as a
    lesson learned.
