Large emailbox & Evolution/Dovecot = slow

Since you are using IMAP, why not put all the mail from those mailing lists into 
separate folders? That's one of the main reasons for choosing IMAP over POP, the 
ability to have networked folders.

Even better would be to use some tool to deliver the mail directly into those 
alternate folders rather than your Inbox. Procmail is one solution if you can't 
do it in the MTA.
