I agree with Terry on the relabel attempt.  Also while
booted from CD try FSCK on the partitions and maybe
the badblocks command (read the man page first).  The
label should not just go away by itself.  You want to
make sure your hard drive is not starting to fall apart.

badblocks /dev/hda1

The default is documented as a non-destructive read only
test.
