Ah, thanks. Feel a bit silly on that one.

[thufir at localhost ~]$ slrn
slrn 0.9.8.1 [2004-10-07]

Reading startup file /etc/slrn.rc.
You should set the NNTPSERVER environment variable to your server name.
Example (csh): setenv NNTPSERVER my.news.server
Example (sh) : NNTPSERVER='my.news.server' && export NNTPSERVER
For now, I'm going to try "localhost" as the default...

Using newsrc file /home/thufir/.jnewsrc for server localhost.
Connecting to host localhost ...Unable to make connection. Giving up.
slrn fatal error:
Failed to initialize server.
[thufir at localhost ~]$ NNTPSERV='news.made.up' && export NNTPSERVER
[thufir at localhost ~]$ slrn
slrn 0.9.8.1 [2004-10-07]

Reading startup file /etc/slrn.rc.
Using newsrc file /home/thufir/.jnewsrc for server shawnews.vc.shawcable.net.
Connecting to host shawnews.vc.shawcable.net ...
Connected to host. Posting ok.
Checking for new groups ...
Checking news ...
[thufir at localhost ~]$ date
Thu Nov 10 15:35:49 EST 2005
[thufir at localhost ~]$

How can I make the NNTPSERVER setting "stick", please? Once I set the
server all is fine, but I want that save that setting between slrn
sessions. It's an environment variable.
