What happened to my Desktop icons?

try renaming the gnome directory under the user's home directory and then
log out and log in again.
This will reset the settings to default.
If this fixes the problem - you can alway go back to your data and change
the desktop related files only.
And, you should *NEVER* login as root to GNOME - only su to it under a
console inside of a user login.
 Good Luck !
