The directory should be there, and if something writes to it, then mounting
over it will simply hide the files that were written in the mount point
directory. This can be confusing if you use a utility like the dump backup
program to read the filesystem through the raw hardware (eg. /dev/hda1) as
it can "see" the files hidden by the mount point. But that's a very unusual
situation.
