Yes on both counts.  Cable select is not used on the CDROM.  I've tried
it with DMA on and off.

IT seems more like a permission problem or 2 logical devices
(/media/cdrom and /media/cdrecorder) accessing /dev/hdc ? Just guesses. 

The device is the dvd/cdrom drive in an HP ZD7280 laptop.  I've got this
problem on another computer as well, a desktop machine.   

There are half a dozen threads on fedoraforum.org about this problem,
but there doesn't seem to be a conclusive solution.
