One option that I haven't seen mentioned is to run ssh on top of a VPN.
I use OpenVPN for access to my home system.  I run it over a randomly
selected UDP port, which should make it extremely unlikely to be
detected by a casual scan.  (UDP port scans take a lot more time than
TCP port scans.)
