OSX- Fedora network problem

Ahh, Samba can give me fits at times.  First I may be talking out of my
ass, but since OSX is Unix like you may want to look into setting up
cross NFS shares instead.  Samba is really for trying to interface
Unix-Windows, and NFS may not be as complicated.  However I know little
about OSX, so that may not be an easy task. 

The first thing I would ask is if SELinux is enabled on the desktop. I
would also like to see the output of 

smbclient -L [ hostname of the desktop ]
nmblookup [hostname of the desktop ]

from the OSX side.
