up2date gone?

After I updated my Fedora Core 4 system the last time I can't get 
up2date to work. When I attempt to start it as root nothing happens.  If 
I try to start it as a user I get the window to type the root password 
into and when I hit enter everytihing vanishes.  Has anyone else had 
this problem.  If I try to reinstall the up2date rpm it says that it is 
already instlalled.
