I cannot give any advice on the mail retrieving, but I can say one-two words 
about eGroupware.

It's a nice groupware tool, and it indeed requires you to setup a mail server, 
either locally or remotely. Currently I'm using it with a ldap addressbook. 
So far so good, but still needs many tune ups.
