The first SMP PC's that I put my hands on were
Pentium III class machines, and they did have 
their quirks.

SMP machines can't work without APICs. On newer SMP machines, 
you have APICs steered via ACPI by default.
Disabling ACPI at the kernel command line using "pci=noacpi" 
or "acpi=off" sometimes helps, if the kernel has trouble 
routing the APIC IRQ's using the ACPI BIOS.

If your SMP machine is pre-ACPI, I have no good advice here.
Post more details, try to capture the last messages in the  
kernel boot sequence. Your problem may be unrelated to SMP.
Does the kernel load at all?
