Shutdown / runlevel change messages go to vt8

I don't know the answer to your question but you have resolved a
mystery that has been driving me crazy for months.
What I observed was when I logged-ing to vt1 and then did a init 3 the
screen would seem to lock up or go blank. Now I know why.
