I've had one PC that I couldn't get Firefox to start up on for a few
days, and now I've just got around to having a look why. I tried Les'
suggestion, but strace isn't on my system (and I don't know where it
comes from to install it). I tried your suggestion, but there wasn't
anything running. I had a look into my profile directory, and saw what
my problem was: a "lock" file belonging to a previous session that
shouldn't be there anymore. I deleted that, and I could run Firefox
again.

I suspect that problem occurred when I accidentally unplugged the power
while the PC was running. I forgot what applications were running at
the time, it rebooted without any dramas, so I never bothered to check
on whether anything needed fixing straight away.
