If there is a lot of duplication and compressible files you might
make backuppc (http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/) work for on-disk
backups.  It is extremely handy and you might split off part of
the machines to back up that way even if you still need some on
tape.  Backula (http://www.bacula.org/) looks better suited to
tapes but I have not tried it yet.
