That's right - also more painfully vesa doesn't support xv for video IIRC.
"Blanking out" could be a feature of your monitor reacting to video data
that it objects to rather than anything more complicated. Maybe set up
your monitor and resolution using
system-config-display
while using vesa and try again with radeon now you know you can use the
runlevel 3 grub method instead of recovery boot.
If it fails again, examine /var/log/Xorg.0.log on the next reboot into
runlevel 3.
Gilboa's plan is worth trying too, unfortunately the manufacturer binary
drivers are the only things that will work on some video chip /
motherboard / BIOS combinations.
