I think you may be right. But the bigger problem is that it does not
support mult-arch. Which is why the OP noted that it wanted to remove
a bunch of packages. It cannot deal with i386 and x86_64 packages.

Probably a good suggestion, but are there not updated yum packages for FC3 also?
