removing Java 1.4

A more robust method *would* be:
 rpm -qf $(which java)
However on my system this gives
 file /usr/bin/java is not owned by any package

If I look at the file in question and follow the symbolic links
[dan at carbon ~]$ ll /usr/bin/java
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Mar 22 09:56 /usr/bin/java -> /etc/alternatives/java
[dan at carbon ~]$ ll /etc/alternatives/java
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 Mar 22 09:56 /etc/alternatives/java -> /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.4.2-gcj/bin/java

I can then query the 'real' file
[dan at carbon ~]$ rpm -qf /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.4.2-gcj/bin/java
java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-1.4.2.0-40jpp_83rh

I leave applying this to an actual remove command as an exercise for the reader.
