How to start "init 3" at boot

Then read "man init".

The kernel passes arguments it doesn't consume itself to the default 
initial process (ie. init) and init recognizes a digit argument as the 
runlevel to enter.

(I didn't know the details either. I just googled for "linux kernel 
arguments".)
