Strangely enough, I went out and bought a wrt54g a few years ago
simply because it ran linux and one could administer it as any other
linux machine.

In the mean time several projects have sprung up to allow one to load
3rd party linux firmware (in addition to the stock linux firmware from
linksys).  Right now I'm running openwrt ( http://www.openwrt.org/ )
on the wrt54g and it talks to my laptop running FC5/amd64 just fine.
The only real warts are that laptop end of things with me having to
run ndiswrappers to get the bcm4318 card to work.
