any suggestions to choose cool programs to edit files?

Not sure what is required here. If it is just a text editor, I like
nedit. If it is more than that, I don't have a recommendation. I don't
write Latex.

Personal preference is Quanta
4, organize references
Not sure what "references" are. If this is an address book then I use
the one that is part of Evolution, which, by the way, is a pretty good
email client as well :)
