Actually you don't have to delete anything. Move the following dirs to
a safe place. Restart gnome.

.gnome/ .gnome2/ .gnome2_private/ .gnome_private/ .gconf/  .gconfd/

Hope it works.

I remembered when I change from gnome 2.10 to 2.12 I had a similar
issue.
