I would not fish in the dark but use your ability to control the server
side. Check /var/log/maillog, maybe increase the log_level of Sendmail
to 15 to get a verbose logging. Too be sure Sendmail offers LOGIN as
AUTH MECH and the backend is able / willing to handle this.
