Can anyone explain the use of init3

This is like Ctrl-Alt-BS, but probably cleaner. If you're diddling with
your xorg configuration, and want your changes to affect your login
manager as well as your X session(s), X needs to be completely reset.
Shutting it down entirely via telinit 3 is one way to do that.

X remains running intact.

All this is one reason why I don't like Debians, which run _everything_
in runlevel 2.
