Your access to files is stored by your numeric UID in the filesystem. 
Changing your username shouldn't risk messing up file access.  You will 
need to fix all of your secondary group memberships, if you have any.

You'll probably want to modify the path to your home directory, and 
rename that as well, while you're at it.
