Good advice, but if his box is really frozen it will ignore his request 
to switch to a virtual console.  Why not switch there before it dies and 
wait until it dies to see if there are any panics or other diagnostics 
shown.

Also X drivers are common causes of freezeups.  Try using the "vesa" 
driver instead of whatever is used currently in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to 
see if that makes a difference.
