When I try pinging the machine which hosts the proxy server I get a response
but when I try pinging the machine who's ip address I have given in the dns
server address the message I get is "network unreachable".

Make sure that you have specified reachable DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf
and access to destination port 110 is allowed by your firewall.

This happens because in this case the name resolution is done by the proxy
server and not the system running FC5.
