The problem in my case is that there aren't any bad sectors found in
the extended tests. The claimed errors for /dev/sdb don't seem to
show up in the smartctl tests. Even the long test passes with flying
colors.
# smartctl -a -d ata /dev/sdb
...
SMART Error Log Version: 1
No Errors Logged
SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1
Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA
_of_first_error
# 1 Short offline Completed without error 00% 277 -
# 2 Short offline Completed without error 00% 277 -
# 3 Short offline Completed without error 00% 273 -
# 4 Short offline Completed without error 00% 271 -
# 5 Extended offline Completed without error 00% 270 -
# 6 Short offline Completed without error 00% 263 -
# 7 Extended offline Aborted by host 70% 263 -
# 8 Short offline Completed without error 00% 262 -
(Kanwar, thanks for posting! Its good to know mine isn't an isolated problem.)
