But can your machine ping the DNS servers or gateway?  If not, then it 
is most probably a network configuration and / or hardware/cable issue.
I would remove any additional harvware between you and the source if 
need be, like a router, hub, etc..
run the command '/sbin/ifconfig -a' and make sure it shows an active 
ethernet device with the proper ip address and netmask set.

If all that looks good, I would start swapping hardware, perhaps start 
with the cable if you already swapped out the nic.
