It makes perfect sense if you remember that it is the version-release of
an RPM package.  Take for example:

httpd-2.0.46-57.ent

Package: httpd
Version: 2.0.46
Release: 57.ent

To get just a simple number, you could do something like:

rpm -q --queryformat '%{VERSION}\n' fedora-release
