x86_64 or i386?

You can run i386 packages on x86_64, thanks to the frankenstein's
monstrosity that is multilib. And you'll probably see a performance
increase, but I haven't actually seen much by way of measuring the
difference in a normal desktop Linux workload on the two.

Be aware that Macromedia doesn't produce a 64-bit Flash player, so if
Youtube is important to you, you'll need to run i386 Firefox even on x86_64.
Depending on what you're doing, this may be enough of a pain that it's
easier to just stick with i386 across the board.
